Coaching Vacancy - Leeds Junior Rowing Academy

Overview

Leeds Rowing Club has set up a Junior Rowing Academy in partnership with British Rowing World Class Start and the University of Leeds. Now in our second year, we are looking to appoint a highly motivated full-time coach to develop the programme and lead the on water and land-based coaching of juniors from beginners in school year 8 onwards. The programme is based on talent ID and, working with local schools and our partners, this is an opportunity for someone to lead a programme that has the potential to increase diversity and inclusion in a performance-based environment and make a difference to young people’s lives.

Main Purpose of the Role: 

We are looking to recruit a coach who has the experience and enthusiasm to work with young people from diverse and non-traditional rowing backgrounds and support them to develop in a performance-based environment. The coach will play a leading role in the development the athletes selected for the programme.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

Responsible to the Director of Rowing, the coach will be responsible for:

·      Development and delivery of the Junior training and racing programme.

·      Supervision of Sessional support coaches.

·      Support and development of the junior athletes as rowers and as individuals.

·      Monitoring of athletes and reporting on Academy programme as required by Director of Rowing and other stakeholders.

Detailed Duties

Initially the Coach will deliver land and water-based coaching of the Junior Academy and other duties associated with the Academy. The remainder of their time will be utilised through:

·      Assist in selection of suitable children through Talent ID in schools.

·      Preparation of training programme suitable for age-based groups.

·      Development of racing programme and selection of racing crews.

·      Attendance at competitions and supervision of athletes at competitions.

·      Assistance with the transportation of equipment to and from competitions. 

·      Organisation of and directing sessional support coaches.

·      Actively engage in CPD opportunities to improve coaching ability and bring new skills and knowledge into the team. The British Rowing Start coach based at Leeds boathouse is a partner in the Academy Programme and will provide further opportunities to develop coaching skills and experience.

 

Key Skills/Experience Required

The coach should be able to demonstrate the following:

·      Experience coaching a school or youth rowing programme.

  • Experience in developing athletes from initial entry into the sport of rowing to being competitive at local and National level.

  • Ability to plan, collaborate, organise, and deliver programmes.

Desirable Qualifications

  • British Rowing Coaching qualification UKCC Level 2 or a track record of coaching experience.

  • First aid qualification.

·      Clean Driving licence with the ability to tow trailers.

·      RYA Powerboat Level 2.

Safeguarding 

Leeds Rowing Club has a duty to ensure that we safeguard and promote the welfare of young people and vulnerable adults. The coach will need to be DBS checked and will be responsible for becoming familiar with the Club’s Child Protection & Safeguarding Policy 

Remuneration and Terms: 

 The salary is £22,000 per annum, with an annual leave entitlement of four weeks plus statutory holidays. The initial contract is expected to run from the start May 2022 to end of August 2023.
