About Leeds RC - Brief History Due to the resurgence of the sport during the late 90’s and early 2000’s, a demand for a rowing venue in Leeds was apparent and Leeds was seen as a Key Strategic Area by the Amateur Rowing Association for development. Space was available at Roundhay and with some hard work by committed members, Leeds Rowing Club was born in 2006 and has continued to grow and develop ever since. Absolutely. Our new Junior Rowing Academy programme is designed to give children the best possible opportunity to develop their rowing skills. We run testing sessions every year for children in Year 8 and those we think most likely to do well, we invite to our Learn to Row Programme. This starts with indoor rowing after Christmas and moves onto the water at Easter. Children on the Academy programme will have fun, learn about team work, get active and develop new skills both on and off the water. The Junior Rowing Academy was a concept shaped by the pandemic. During Covid, the lockdown period caused our junior squad to sadly close. Faced with this, the club decided to use this as an opportunity to radically change how children get to participate in rowing. We wanted to truly break the stereotype that only people from certain backgrounds could access rowing so we worked with over 27 schools in some of the most deprived areas of Leeds where children on free school meals and where English was not a first language far exceeded the national average. We selected children from these schools who had the potential to become future rowers, and created an environment where teamwork, hard training and fun could bring long-term success and opportunities for the children. Since 2021, the squad has grown in size from 0 to 100 juniors, with a new cohort of 20 joining each year. Alongside this, the squad success has been phenomenal, with our juniors competing and winning at local heads and regattas, and now making themselves known nationally, qualifying for both the Fawley Challenge Cup and Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta, finalists in the Junior Women’s Double Sculls event at Henley Women’s Regatta, medalling at the Junior Inter-Regional Regatta with our juniors comprising over 50% of the Yorkshire JIRR team in 2024 and 2025, and medalling at both the British Rowing Club Championships and National Schools Regatta. At the peak of the junior performance, we now have juniors representing England at the Home International Regatta, and also representing Great Britain in the Coupe de la Jenunesse (both traditional rowing and beach sprint rowing disciplines). Our Masters are well known on the rowing circuit for their trips abroad to regattas across Europe as well as competing at FISA Masters Regatta. The squad has had huge success over the years with wins in women’s quads, doubles and eights, and back to back wins in the Open coxless fours event at British Rowing Masters Championships Our squad is currently comprised of scullers in Masters C to E categories, but we are now seeing many of our club members starting to take part in events at Masters B. It is an old industrial canal and so easily wide enough for rowing. The site itself is in a heavily industrial area and near to Thwaites Mill Museum. A well used tow path and cycleway runs alongside the canal for its entirety. As a canal, the stretch of water does not have much flow and is well sheltered, ideal conditions for rowing.
